Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Specialist Questions Constipation

My baby is constipated for a week. What can I do?

My baby is 4 weeks old now and has been severely constipated for a week. He is on breast milk only. The doctors say it is normal for babies to get constipation. But I am worried. What are the natural remedies I can try for him to ease up?

First, you must make sure he/she is getting enough milk. You will know that when he/she has around 6 wet diapers a day and gains weight when weight is measured using the same scale. If that is reassured, you can dilute one teaspoon of prune juice in an ounce of water in a bottle and let him/ger nipple it once. Do not use it often, as it can cause severe diarrhea.
It is not abnormal unless the stool is hard and coming out as pellets
Breast milk is the best natural remedy.
