General Practitioner Questions Finger Injuries and Disorders

My finger is purulent—should I be concerned?

A couple hours ago, at around 10am, I was picking at the skin around my nail. I was picking at the skin on the left side of my nail, and once I was done it was bleeding quite a bit. 8 hours later, I squeezed the finger and noticed puss. The area is red and inflamed, as well as painful and tender to the touch. I am a 17 year old female, and I take 100 milligrams of Zoloft (sertraline) every day at 9:30pm. Should I be concerned about my finger?

An puss should be let out - an age old medical saying says, if there be puss, let it out. You can get some fucidin salve from you doctor to put on it. That should take care of it. Soak is in hot (as hot as you can stand it) soapy (any soap will do, but the best is old fashioned brown soap) water for 10 minutes morning and evening.
yes you will need 1) topical antibiotic 2) oral antibiotic x7 days
Hi there, Yes, in my opinion you should go to an Urgent Care or see a doctor today to have it looked at . What you are describing sounds like an infection and will more than likely need antibiotics to resolve. Your instincts are very good! Please be seen by a doctor today whether that means Urgent Care, an Emergency room, or a primary care doctor. This is what I would have advised a family member to do and is only my opinion based on what you are telling me. Goodluck okay! Go get that finger checked out :)
