Lately my mother has been stopped in her tracks with sudden and frequent heart palpitations. What is a likely cause of this?

It could be an arrhythmia - irregular heart beat or can be stress response.
It is likely the palpitations are caused by a heart arrhythmia, which may or may not be serious. She should have a heart recording for long enough to catch a palpitation attack, to identify the cause. Her GP can arrange that directly or through the local hospital.
There are many types of palpitations. If they are severe enough that they are stopping her in her tracks then a heart monitor or ECG should be done to evaluate She should go to her PCP to discuss the symptoms and have heart monitor for further evaluation.
