“Recurrent Anal Cancer Treatment”
Diagnosed with Stage IIa anal cancer. Did Nigro protocol. Was NED for 9 months. Cancer has recurred in same place. Only option I was given was APR surgery. I am 78, have a-fib, CHF, CKD, diabetes, and COPD. I am afraid I will not make it thru surgery and recovery. Was told that if cancer came back after APR, I could be give some sort of chemo or chemo combo.
Given my age and health conditions, would it be feasible to just do the chemo now instead of the surgery?

But keep in mind if you don’t do the surgery that means that cancer will stay and you goal will be to keep it stable and prevent as much possible the spread with the chemo.
The chemo you can get now is what we treat stage4 anal cancer pts (Carboplatin plus Paclotaxel).
Honestly, from my experience I would advocate to do the surgery because this cancer is not removed it would be very painful and will give recurrent infections etc.
The quality of life you will have if you keep this cancer is not what you would accept for your loved one.
