OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions OB-GYN

Sphincterplasty from obstetric injury?

After a prolonged labor and nearly three hours of pushing, I delivered my son at 9lbs 6oz in 2013. I was told a few days after that I’d suffered a third/fourth-degree year but they recommended natural healing vs surgery at that point. Eight years and countless appointments later, I have a doctor who recommends sphincterplasty because of fecal incontinence.

What are the success rates with this type of surgery?
What type of doctor would be best suited for this? Ob/Gyn? Colorectal? Cosmetic?
How many surgeries should they perform annually to maintain proficiency?

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Several kinds of surgeons could do this but you want one who does female pelvic surgery, like a urogynecologist or pelvic surgery specialist. There’s a high success rate with the first repair so you want to make sure it’s done right. Also super important to keep your stools soft and not strain. Good luck.
