Statins vs Zetia and moderate assignment of statin instead of aggressive.

As an individual working in the medical domain, albeit not as a physician, I encounter a prevalent occurrence of Type II diabetes within my family. To manage this condition, I am currently prescribed Ozempic, Metformin, glipizide, and Atorvastatin. Inquiring about potential peripheral neuropathy, I received the following response after suggesting a switch to Zetia: "I've consulted with our pharmacy specialist. While there have been a few reported cases of peripheral neuropathy associated with atorvastatin and rosuvastatin following their release, such instances are rare, affecting less than 1% of patients. Nonetheless, there's a possibility of its occurrence. On the other hand, pravastatin hasn't shown any links to peripheral neuropathy. You might consider transitioning to pravastatin."

Additionally, I posed a question regarding the possibility of reducing the Atorvastatin dosage from 40mg to 20mg once cholesterol levels have improved. I find it puzzling that Atorvastatin must remain at 40mg. My current lipid profile consists of an LDL of 35, HDL of 49, Triglycerides at 92, and Cholesterol measuring 102. Despite my request, they declined to refer me to an endocrinologist, citing that my blood sugar is well-managed. This raises the question: must one's condition deteriorate to seek specialized care? It's worth noting that I am not disclosing the source of this medical counsel, though my background as a retired military member offers a clue. Thank you, and I appreciate your assistance. Respectfully, a Veteran.

Hello,

Given your labs, decreasing atorvastatin to 20 mg seems like an acceptable thing to try, to see if it helps with your neuropathy symptoms.
