Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Nephrologist

Urine electrophoresis test results?

About 3 years ago I noticed that my urine had become foamy in appearance when it hit the water in the toilet bowl. I had several urinalysis tests that came out normal for protein and everything else. I still found this to be a strange symptom and again voiced my concern to my dr. so she decided to do a protein electrophoresis test. The test came back normal and the dr. agreed. So I left the issue alone for a long time, actually about 2 years. I recently went to a new dr. and as he was flipping through my chart he made a comment about how I shouldn’t have any protein in my urine and if there was any there should only be trace amounts of albumin. I had him give me a copy of the test. The test was done by LabCorp and there are no reference ranges on the test. His comments really confused me and he had other comments as well about my previous dr. just glossing other things over on my bloodwork. Now I’m not really sure that I trust either of their opinions on this particular topic since they are both general practitioners and I’m assuming I’d need to talk to a urologist or a nephrologist about this. I’m looking to get an opinion on this from a specialist.

Foamy urine may be from protein in the urine. But other reasons like full bladder, which can make your urine stream more forceful and faster and results in foamy urine, or very concentrated urine can cause foamy urine. Please do a urine analysis and also a spot urine for albumin/creatinine ratio and also spot urine for protein/Cr ratio. This will give an answer.
Thanks.
Interpreting the test results for UPEP is fairly straightforward: Globulins shouldn't be present in your urine. Albumin levels should be below 5 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Any amount of globulins — or more than 5 mg/dL of albumin — will be considered abnormal. If all other investigations are normal and UPEP is normal and still worried, consult with a Nephrologist.
