OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions OB-GYN

Very high FSH?

I’m being investigated for POI, age 39, absent or very light periods/spotting 1-3 days duration, cycle length 10-60 days. Other menopause symptoms are present. I have known hypothyroidism on 75mcg levythyroxine, TSH & T4 stable. PMH: colposcopy, PPH. GP is concerned with very high FSH and seeking a gynecologist opinion.

Blood results;
FSH 96.7 (first) 146.8 (second) LH 56.7 (first) 97.8 (second), Oestradiol 97, Progesterone 6, prolactin 171, testosterone 1.3. What could be causing such high FSH levels? Could it be something other than early menopause/poi?

Complaint duration: Months
Medications: Levythyroxine
Conditions: Hypothyroidism

Although your menopause is kicking in at an unusually early age, high levels of FSH are normal during menopause. This is due to the lack of ovulation which lowers FSH indirectly, so your system tries to get you to ovulate after you have quit doing so. Think of it like an anaconda squeezing the life out of its prey. The more the prey wiggles, that harder the snake squeezes.
