Either an epidural (that has already been placed for labor) or a spinal can be used.  These are the preferred methods over a general anesthetic.  These modalities limit the amount of anesthesia that your baby receives.
Majority of hospitals offers labor epidural for the beginning of labor. It consist of inserting a small bore catheter in the epidural space in you spine at the level above the hip.medication is infused continuously to keep you comfortable.should your labor is converted in a caesarean , the epidural can be use for that purpose.
The most effective is a lumbar epidural with local anesthetic.

A normal vaginal delivery is commonly facilitated by epidural anesthesia. A Caesarian section delivery is usually carried out under an epidural or spinal block, or sometimes under general endotracheal anesthesia if emergent.
