THERE ARE MULTIPLE ANESTHETIC PROCEDURES UTILIZED FOR CHILDBIRTH THEY ARE; GENERAL ANESTHESIA IN THIS PROCEDURE THE PATIENT IS COMPLETELY ASLEEP THROUGH THE ENTIRE DELIVERY.THEN THE SPINAL ANESTHESIA WHICH IS VERY POPULAR AND GIVE THE PATIENT THE OPTION OF BEING FULLY AWAKE UNTIL THE BABY HAS BEEN DELIVERIED AND MILDLY SEDATED FOR THE REST OF THE PROCEDURE AND VERY SIMULAR TO THAT IS THE EPIDURAL WHICH IS USUALLY PLACED MID LABOR PRIOR TO ENTERING THE O.R.THEN LAST BUT NOT LEAST IS THE LOCAL GIVEN DURING DELIVERY FOR NATURAL BIRTHS
-IV pain medication, intermittent
-Continuous pain medication
-Epidural
-Combined spinal-epidural
If you are having a normal delivery and want pain relief, it would be done in the form of and epidural. If you are having an elective c section, it would be a spinal. Both are local anesthetic and you will be awake for both. The spinal just works quicker and numbs your legs whereas with the epidural, it takes time to work and you can still move your legs and even walk about.
