There are many operations, and your doctor will choose the one suitable to you based on the condition of your prolapse and also the associated other symptoms. Generally, the operation can be either done through your abdomen or through the anus. If you wish for your care to be under us, we are happy to see you
There are many factors regarding treatment of rectal prolapse. Body habitus, pre existing medical issues, etc. the most reliable treatment is a surgical resection of redundant sigmoid colon and a sexy procedure of the proximal rectum to the posterior abdominal wall adjacent to the sacrum.=20
Good afternoon, There are several options for treatment of rectal prolapse ranging from conservative treatment to operative treatment. Starting with diet and lifestyle changes increasing fiber and hydration to prevent constipation as well as adding stool softeners. Pelvic floor therapy such as Kegel exercises may strengthen the pelvic floor as well as biofeedback to improve muscle coordination. Some patients if the prolapse is infrequent and mild may opt to manually reduce the prolapse by pushing it back in. Surgical treatments include abdominal approaches such as rectopexy which involves stitching the rectum to the sacrum to restore its normal position. Resection & rectopexy involves removing part of the bowel if there is redundant tissue or constipation and then stitching it to the sacrum. The Delorme procedure involves removing the redundant mucosal layers of the prolapsed tissue and the muscle layers are accordioned and stitched. Last resort is a perineal proctectomy which removes the prolapsed portion through the anus. This may be an approach for patients who are elderly or frail and cannot tolerate an abdominal approach.
