It's hard to pinpoint the exact causes of ankle pain. Some are caused by a mis-step, some by straining, and some by a sprain. No matter what caused it, Ankle pain can be relieved or fixed using massage, acupuncture and herbs.
Arthritis, tendonitis, and osteochondral defect, ligament sprains or tears, Achilles tendonitis, and others
Ankle pain can have various causes, including:
Sprains or Strains: Overstretching or tearing ligaments or tendons can result from twisting or rolling the ankle.
Arthritis: Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can lead to inflammation and pain in the ankle joint.
Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons, often from overuse or repetitive motion, can cause pain.
Fractures: A broken bone in the ankle can lead to severe pain, swelling, and bruising.
Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the joints.
Flat Feet or High Arches: These can affect the mechanics of your walk, leading to ankle pain.
Overuse or Overtraining: Repetitive stress from activities like running or sports can strain the ankle.
Infections: In rare cases, infections in the joint or bone can cause pain and swelling.
Relief methods:
Rest: Avoid weight-bearing activities and give the ankle time to heal.
Ice: Apply ice packs to reduce swelling and inflammation.
Compression: Use an elastic bandage or brace for support.
Elevation: Elevate the ankle to reduce swelling.
Over-the-Counter Medications: Ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain relief.
Physical Therapy: Strengthening exercises and stretching can aid recovery.
If pain persists or worsens, it’s important to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

There are multiple causes of pain. I recommend you make an appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon (podiatrist) for further recommendations and evaluation and diagnosis.
Generally, the causes of ankle pain are sprain/strains/ ligamentous injury, stress fractures, inflammation and fracture. Best relief is to decrease swelling by ice, NSAID's, or heat. If that does not help make an appointment with your doctor or with a chiropractor, physical therapist, acupuncturist or a healthcare provider.
