It would depend what type of dry eye you have. For evaporative dry eye, an artificial tear that is preservative free, and contains a lipid to prevent tear evaporation would be most useful. For individuals with dry caused by decreased tear production, there are tears that are available that have retentive properties that are helpful for decreasing the number of tears that need to be used each day. Either way, most individuals do best when they use preservative free artificial tears, rather than those in bottles. Steven Vale, M. D. Dry eyes can be treated with over the counter lubricating drops.
