Psychologist Questions Antidepressants

What are the side effects of antidepressants?

I have been undergoing a lot of emotional stress since the time I started taking antidepressants to cure my postpartum depression. I am normally a happy person, but now very low emotionally. Is this a normal side effect of antidepressants?

You need to be smart as to the mental, behavioral, and physiological side effects of medication - monitor it closely and work with your medical doctor to make adjustments as necessary.
It's hard to say. Different antidepressants have different effects on different people. I'd suggest you speak to your doctor. You may respond better to another medication, you may need a different dose, or you may need to speak with a psychologist about events in your life.

Good luck!

Dear Madam:

Sorry to read about your postpartum depression and the possible side effects of the antidepressants.

Your question is legitimate. As I am a psychologist and not a medical Dr., I am not qualified to answer your question. My suggestion is to ask the prescribing Dr. as they are the experts in medicines and their side effects.

Take care,

Depends on the individual. Most are adding weight and feeling sluggish. If you are not happy with one, you can always ask your doctor to change to another.
Sometimes antidepressants can cause you to feel apathetic (without emotion) because most patients taking antidepressants that experience this are usually happy that they are no longer bursting into tears at a moment's notice. Yet, if you continue to experience these side effects, you should speak to your prescribing doctor and let him/her know about your concerns.
