Over the counter medications such as Claritin, Zyrtec, or Allegra (or their generic versions) are all safe to use for seasonal allergies. A nasal steroid like Nasacort is helpful if there is significant nasal congestion.
Over 6yrs of age children with allergic rhinitis symptoms can safely use a combination of long-acting antihistamines such as Claritin/Zyrtec or Allegra and nasal steroid sprays such as Flonase or Nasacort. Allergy eye drops can also be added as needed - Pataday, Alaway, or Zaditor are good OTC options.

8 year old may take most of the over-the -counter meds. Oral tablets Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec, as well as nasal sprays, like Flonase, Rhinocort, Nasacort.
The most effective treatment though is the allergy vaccination which can not only control symptoms temporarily, but can provide a long term relief.
