If you have a history of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV), there are several strategies your healthcare team can use to minimize your risk: Preoperative Strategies: Risk Assessment: Your provider will evaluate your risk factors (e.g., history of PONV, motion sickness, type of surgery, and anesthesia used). Hydration: Adequate IV fluid administration may help reduce nausea. Medication Selection: Choosing anesthetics and pain management strategies that are less likely to cause nausea (e.g., regional anesthesia instead of general anesthesia when appropriate). Intraoperative Strategies: Use of Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA): Avoiding volatile anesthetics and using propofol-based anesthesia can lower PONV risk. Multimodal Antiemetic Approach: Your anesthesiologist may administer a combination of anti-nausea medications, such as: 5-HT3 receptor antagonists (e.g., ondansetron) NK-1 receptor antagonists (e.g., aprepitant) Dopamine antagonists (e.g., metoclopramide, droperidol) Steroids (e.g., dexamethasone) Antihistamines or anticholinergics (e.g., diphenhydramine, scopolamine patch) Postoperative Strategies: Continue Antiemetics: You may receive scheduled or as-needed anti-nausea medications after surgery. Minimize Opioids: Alternative pain management strategies (e.g., acetaminophen, NSAIDs, nerve blocks) can reduce nausea risk. Gradual Oral Intake: Starting with clear liquids and advancing as tolerated can prevent stomach upset. Discuss your PONV history with your surgical and anesthesia team before your procedure so they can tailor a prevention plan for you. Hi, To prevent post-op nausea and vomiting discuss the issue with your anesthesiologist prior to going into surgery. The anesthesiologists have wonderful medications and protocols to reduce the risk of post-op nausea and vomiting. Hope this helps. Sincerely
Hi - lots can be done to prevent PONV or post operative nausea and vomiting. 1st - please tell your anesthesiologist about your history. I suggest a liquid diet for the 12-24hr preop and to eat only a VERY lite meal on the post operative day. Medications given to you on the day of surgery that might be helpful depending upon your health history include: Pepcid, Decadron, Zofran, Reglan and TIVA with Propofol. other options include a scopolamine patch. Your Anesthesiologist can help guide you on the day of your procedure. Best wishes, Dr. Glenn Dr. Glenn Brady L&M Anesthesiology & Pequot Surgical Ctr. Make sure Vit D3, magnesium, zinc and Vit B12 daily months prior to having Surgery to limit nausea and vomiting. This is genetic.
First, you should stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your procedure. Having fluids with electrolytes (pedialyte, Gatorade) also helps in hydrating a little better than plain water. (Of course, only have these if you're allowed). Secondly, you should mention this to your anesthesiologist when they do their pre procedure assessment. This way they can discuss what medications have worked best for you in the past and what other medications they may be able to use during the procedure. Good luck! Cindy K.
