If you do not take care of your teeth by brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist for cleaning periodically, you develop gingivitis followed by chronic periodontitis leading to bone damage and gum recession.
There can be multiple causes of gum recession. Excessive grinding force on the teeth (during sideways motions) is one of the main causes. Too hard a toothbrush, scrubbing too hard, excess toothpaste, inflamed gums can all contribute to recession as well.
The leading causes are over scrubbing with tooth brushing or too stiff of a toothbrush, and clenching and grinding. You can also get recession when you have gum disease, or frenum pulls. It is more common on crooked teeth and people with big teeth but small jaws, and after orthodontic therapy.
