What causes knee swelling?

About 3 weeks ago, it started off with knee pain especially going up and down the stairs. I felt pain after getting off the treadmill I ran for 25 minutes but did warm up for 5 minutes to start off with. When kneeling I did feel bruising inside the knee, I've had pains in the knee last pain I had was last week although I saw the doctor Monday told him it was three weeks ago but forgot to tell him last week I had pain in the knee. When squating in a bath and getting up it sounded like a creaking noise from the knee, but when exercising there is no pain now no popping or clicking at the time of injury. I did limp about a few weeks ago but now I'm walking ok there's no pain going up and down the stairs or when I'm exercising. I've put cold therapy ibuprofen on it resting elevating it nothing seems to be working at the moment but the doctor said my knee is bigger than the other if it's still the same to go back and see GP in 2-4 weeks. I'm trying volatrol at the moment so I hope that works to bring the swelling down. What does the doctor usually mean by my knee being bigger than the other is that swelling? What do you think I did to the knee for it to swell?

Probably knee cap arthritis(severity can vary). To clarify see an orthopedic surgeon.
Happy to help you. Swelling is generally caused by inflammation in the lining of the knee called the synovium. If you have some creaking and cracking, that could be a form of rough cartilage inside your knees called chondromalacia. You are quite young. If this continues to happen, you should probably get an MRI. You said you saw a doctor, but did not say what type. You should definitely see an orthopedist.
Sounds like a condition called chondromylacia. Use elliptical rather than treadmill or stair climbing. Ice after working out. Walk in pool chin deep for exercise if it stays swollen to rest it.
Hello. Your problem is very common. Your knee is inflamed and you have mildly excess fluid present. This occurs when the knee is inflamed. Usually this occurs due to activities which elevate the force across the knee cap. This includes squatting, kneeling, stairs, bike and many other activities. It also aggravated with tightness of your hamstrings and calf muscles, lifting, increased weight. So in your case you are doing an excellent job with icing, anti inflammatory meds. Try stretching the muscles several times daily. Do not sit with knees bent to long. Avoid stairs and squatting until inflammation resolves. If swelling does not improve, pain worse then see an Orthopedic surgeon. The noise only is significant if pain an swelling are getting worse. Good luck
