What do hospitals do for babies with fevers?

My baby has a fever and I want to take him to a hospital. What do hospitals do for babies with fevers?

1 Answer

It depends on the age of the baby. If the baby is less than 30 days old, they will check to make sure baby does not have a serious infection involving the urine, blood, or surrounding the brain. If the child is less than 60 days old, it is possible to check for UTI or blood stream infection, depending on symptoms and history. If the child is greater than 2 months old, and no respiratory symptoms, it is reasonable to start stepwise and check for UTI.
