There are two types of contrast for a CT scan, oral and intravenous. Contrast enables the Radiologist read the scan more accurately with better definition of the the bowel and vessels. There should be no side effect from contrast. However, some people allergic to IV contrast and may develop a reaction which is usually treatable.
In the usual case..the contrast is well tolerated. It is voided out of the body. The images are read by a radiologist. The information given to the clinician helps in making medical decisions.
