After the extraction and graft the area is allowed to heal. Generally 3 to 4 months. It depends whether it is in the upper or lower jaw. The dentist will then order a CBCT to plan for the implant placement. They will be looking at length and width of the bone and also the bone density in the area. The implant can generally be scheduled after the completion of the CBCT.
Great care to the extraction and bone graft site must be taken to ensure success. The bone graft is very fragile after treatment. Eating soft foods is essential for the first couple of weeks. The mouth must be kept very clean while simultaneously avoiding the extraction/bone graft site. Cleansing the area with a prescription mouthwash and special brush may be needed. The goal is to grow as much bone as possible to support an implant, so excellent home care is key. Contact your dentist for specific instructions pertaining to your bone graft.
