heart, in particular the atrium or receiving chamber. the electrical impulses the fly around in the atrial walls endlessly. Every so often one of those impulses gets through to the ventricle, the pumping chamber of the heart and then the heart beats. This can occur as much as 150 beats per minute. treatment consists of blood thinners to prevent the noncontracting atrium from filling with clots, and cardiac meds that control the rate to between 60 and 100.
