What is causing the nausea?

I just starting dating a girl 1 year ago and she has nausea constantly. She says that it started six years ago when she was a freshman at the University of Hawaii and she's been throwing up ever since.

There are many reasons that could lead to chronic nausea and vomiting - infection, compromised organ function (ex. liver), chemical sensitivity, chronic exposure of toxins including alcohol, drugs, heavy metals or mold, cancer. It may have a connection to the nervous system. It could be a response to past trauma, mental-emotional stress - both connected to vaso-vagal response. You can encourage her to seek out medical guidance, work-up and care. Get 2nd, 3rd, 4th opinions, if needed. Seek outside conventional medicine, if necessary. However, remember boundaries in this, for you. It is not your job to do any of this for her. She has to ready for that step in her own healing. You can express concern, mirror back what you see, ask her if she wants your support, and if so, what that would look like.
More than likely it started as a result of chronic stress and needs to be addressed. Acupuncture and homeopathy, both are effective in the treatment of that condition.
Dear Patient,

The answer to your question is very complicated. There are a number of things, conditions, and illnesses that could be causing her nausea. Some of these might be benign, others may be more serious. The differential diagnosis is very long. Hopefully, she will get in to see her family physician and assess what is going on.

Not enough information provided to venture a guess because there are so many possible causes of nausea. It may not even be a GI cause, since nausea can be the result of almost any organ system disorder, such as a neurological or endocrine disease. A careful history and exam should be conducted, followed by appropriate testing to try to diagnose the cause of nausea.
