Hematologist (Blood Specialist) Questions Hematologist

What is my life expectancy after two units of red blood cell transfusion?

I’m wondering what the long-term life expectancy is if I receive two units of red blood cell transfusions from a bleeding ulcer.

The normal life expectancy of the red blood cells (RBC) is approximately 120 days. Now red blood cells units can be stored in the refrigerator (at 40C) for up to 42 days. Some red blood cells can be damaged during storage by breaking down more easily and they can release cell-free hemoglobin (called hemolysis) either in the storage bag or when transfused. Your body produce RBC’s every day. Once the bleeding ulcer is healed, your RBC’s volume will go to a normal state. Your hemolytic anemia needs to be checked by your Hematologist and your ulcer needs to be repaired. Obviously, whatever triggered the ulcer (etiologic factor) has to be removed. Thank you.
Aside from infection risk, if you have received and tolerated a total of two blood cell transfusions, I do not anticipate an impact on your life expectancy.
