Pericarditis occurs when the "fibrous" sac surrounding your heart becomes inflamed and is holding fluid. This can be caused by bacterium, viruses, injuries and sometimes certain medications. Treatment options depend on the severity of your specific situation. This can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending: by anti-inflammatory and/or pain medications, antibiotics, steroids and if needed surgery to drain the fluids out. Hope this helps.
