the easiest (and the one I used to use with my kids) is dipping a clean wash cloth into cold water - wring it out a bit and let the baby chew on that. Also - finding a teether that can go into the freezer and is flat enough for your baby to get it into his mouth to chew on. For my kids, I had one that was a flat ring (that didn't freeze) and two flat "ears" on the sides that would fit into the mouth - looked a bit like Mickey Mouse.
