Upset stomach pain with heartburn is a result of acid excess in the stomach and some acid reflux up into the esophagus. Acid can cause irritation and erosion and small and eventually larger ulcerations. Best treatment is Pepto Bismol liquid plus gastric antihistamines such as Famotidine and ranitidine. Other acid blockers are available too such as Omeprazole. These should not be taken for longer than eight weeks.
Gastritis usually doesn't cause pain. Many doctors, GI and non-GI, tell patients that they have gastritis as a cause for pain but unfortunately this is not accurate in most cases. Most of the time gastritis is mild or irrelevant to the pain. Dyspepsia is a much more common explanation for epigastric pain. In short, make sure you find a good GI doctor who will correctly identify the source of the pain and provide appropriate treatment. Do not assume gastritis is the cause.
