There is no one answer to your question; it depends on the exact location of pain and the quality of pain and how long you've had the pain and where and how it began. We stay far away from narcotics these days for all but cancer. Often, a simple anti inflammatory muscle relaxant, and sometimes a topical prescription cream compound can be very helpful. At times, more chronic meds such as gabapentin can be helpful as well.
Everyone responds differently to various modalities of pain blockers. Sometimes merely ice or heat will solve the problem. Sometimes rest or a warm bath will allieve the pain. Some use mild physical therapy or stretching techniques. Other go to chiropractors or have acupuncture done. There are also massage therapists. You may also purchase a TENS (transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation) device. Lidocaine patches are also helpful. Some patients respond to aspirin for short periods of time while others respond to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Motrin. Others respond to muscle relaxers or joint injections. Some responds to short courses of benzodiazepines. Some respond to cognitive behavioral therapy. I rarely use opioids due to the addictive properties. Pain centers can give epidural injections or implant a spinal stimulator. You can also try more than one method at a time. You need to work with your primary care physician or pain specialist to see which is the best method of pain control for you.
