My friend is an alcoholic and I want to help her. What is the best treatment for alcoholics?

Hi, good and loyal friend. Alcohol is often a challenge for people, there is medication and groups to help. Whether it’s AAA or celebrating recovery anything is better than nothing. But the challenge becomes whether or not wants to quit. Often we call it motivational therapy, I like to say “meet them where they are at, in terms of quitting or thinking about it.” If you're in it for the long haul then prepare for relapses. I would recommend not drinking with your friend if you are trying to help them get out of it. Also, alcohol is a string addiction and disease. Don’t be mad at your friend if they relapse or if they are not ready. But your question suggests that you are a GREAT friend already. I wish you the best of success with your friend.

Hello and thank you for your question. There are several different treatments available for substance use disorders. The best one is the one that works for your friend. Maybe try finding out what her/his insurance will support and start there. Some insurances offer support with rehab programs and medication for treatment. If insurance is not a factor, ask your friend what he/she is comfortable with and start there. Wishing you good results with supporting your friend. Thank you.
First, she has to want to change. Secondly, therapy, support groups, a sponsor, positive and strong network of support. Lastly, we willing to fight to fight daily to overcome.
