Since close to 80% of all heel spurs respond to non-surgical treatments that include rest, ice treatments, oral and injectable steroids orthotics-those are the treatments that I recommend. But if these treatments don't work surgery does become the possible next course for heel spur relief.
It all depends on where the heel spur is located. Is it on the bottom of the heel or is it in the back? If it is on the back of the heel, when does it hurt? Is the skin where it hurts red? Does the area appear swollen or puffy? Does it hurt when you walk? Is it sore when you get up out of bed in the morning? Is it sore when you get up after sitting for a long period of time? The answer to those questions would allow me to provide a better answer.
There are many treatments for heel pain and heel spurs. Conservative treatment includes orthotics, stretching exercises, oral anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injections and physical therapy. Sometimes surgery is needed to alleviate pain as well. Jonathan M. Kletz, DPM Texas Foot WorksDallas, Athens and Gun Barrel City Texas214-340-8885
One treatment of High Intensity Ultrasonic Wave therapy. Not radial eswt which requires multiple sessions to help reduce your symptoms temporarily. Orthotripsy which is one treatment to resolve the calcification in the band of tissue called the plantar fascia. Heel Spurs themselves do not hurt, they are secondary to what is going on. steroid injections will weaken the band of tissue and can cause spontaneous rupture even though they offer short term relief. midohiofootandankle.com
The answer is "it depends", it depends on location, size, quality of life affected, job, foot type, etc....please consult your local podiatrist on the course of treatment.

I recommend you make an appointment with a foot and ankle specialist (podiatrist) for diagnosis and treatment options.
