It is very unusual for a person with a hip dislocation not to be hospitalized and the hip reduced either closed with anesthesia or open with surgery. If you are a young child closed reduction and casting can be attempted but after a few months surgery is required. In adults, hip dislocation is often accompanied with an acetabular fracture again which often needs to be surgically treated. If you are an adult with a congenitally dislocated hip and increasing disability, total hip replacement may be considered. First it needs to be completely reduced.A true traumatic dislocation could result in arthritis. You need to work with an orthopedic surgeon and a physical therapist.
