Right now, the strongest medicine we have for chronic heartburn are drugs called "Proton Pump Inhibitors" with medicines such as Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid and Protonix. Many of these medicines are over-the-counter so give them a try and if you need to take them for longer than 2-3 months to fix your heartburn, then something else might be wrong and you need to see a specialist.
The strongest medicine (most effective at suppressing acid production) is Prilosec. For heartburn, at night only Pepcid is best. The new medication for the infection h. Pylori is stronger than Prilosec but is not available without antibiotics in the formulation.
The strongest anti-acid medications are the proton pump inhibitors: omeprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole, etc. They vary in potency to some extent but in general are very effective at controlling acid production in the stomach. Best to take on an empty stomach 30-60 minutes before breakfast to maximize acid suppression.
