Topical anesthesia may involve application of local anesthetics to mucosal tissues (in the mouth or nasal passages) to numb an area prior to dental or oropharyngeal surgeries or may involve application of a topical eutectic mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine (EMLA cream) to numb the skin of children prior to insertion of an intravenous catheter.
