Local anesthesia refers to any of a number of numbing medications injected to anesthetize the area having surgery. The type of numbing medication used depends on the length of the procedure and the desired length of anesthesia.
A local anesthetic, either lidocaine or bupivacaine.
A drug which causes the area where it is injected to go "numb" is used in local anesthesia. While there are many different local anesthetics, lidocaine is the most commonly used local anesthetic in surgery.
