Imodium is an anti-diarrheal drug that may help with symptoms; however, this may not treat the underlying cause. Some causes of diarrhea include change in diet, parasites, infectious or immune-mediated disease. Bringing your dog to their primary care doctor is recommended to perform a fecal flotation (to rule out parasites) and bloodwork (to see if there's any concern for an infectious process) and if any other medication may be necessary.
Thank you for your question. Diarrhea is a common condition in pets that can be caused by various factors and requires specific treatment. It can be caused by a parasitic infection like giardia, bacterial toxins such as clostridium, or even be a symptom of more serious underlying malabsorptive disorders like inflammatory bowel disease. All of which need different treatment. Generally, diarrhea caused by dietary indiscretion should resolve within 3-5 days with a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice. However, since diarrhea can have different causes, it is best to seek veterinary care if you are concerned about your pet's condition. A visit to your nearest veterinary hospital can help determine the underlying cause of your pet's diarrhea and ensure they receive appropriate care.
