I recommend finding a good & experienced acupuncturist that offers comprehensive acupuncture services that'll help you recover the fastest.
I recommend finding an acupuncturist who has some orthopedic training. Most acupuncturists treat pain, and there isn't a "specific" kind of acupuncture for this. Ask about their training.
For sciatica Ive had the best success with needle cupping acupuncture. It has the combined effect to soothe the muscles & inflammation while simultaneously stimulating the circulation. Of course it depends on the sciatic condition. Check with your primary to see if alternative medicine is a good option for your condition. Live Happy, - Happy Cloud Acupuncture Michael A. Sciatica is one of the most common issues that acupuncturists treat with a very high success rate. Any licensed acupuncturist should be able to treat sciatica.

Traditional acupuncture and dry needling can both help sciatica.  I often use electrostimulation  when I am treating sciatica.
All acupuncturists are trained to treat pain conditions. Just make sure they have L.Ac. after their name. There are other practitioners who are not fully trained but their board allows them to use acupuncture needles. Unfortunately, they are not fully trained. The WHO requires at least 1800 hours of training but many other practitioners only have 30-100 hours of training. Some Naturopaths have about 300 hours of training. So make sure they have L.Ac. after their name to ensure they have the full 1800 hour minimum of training.
We start with 6 sessions at 2x a week for 3 weeks. Everyone responses differently to treatment but usually expect you to be 30-40% better by the 6th session. Then we will taper down to every other week, so on and so forth.
Electroacupuncture is best plus use Moxibustion.
Any kind of acupuncture will work for sciatica.
No such a “what type “

An experienced acupuncturist will know how to treat your sciatica correctly.
It's not so much the system of acupuncture as it is how well trained the practitioner is.

Unless you happen to be in one of the handful of states that have large numbers of acupuncturists, you'll likely only find folks who practice so-called "TCM" or "Traditional Chinese Medicine". We could argue for hours regarding how "traditional" this system really is, but that's neither here nor there.

For your purposes, can a TCM practitioner help with your sciatica? The answer is, yes, most likely they'll be able to at least make you more comfortable.
