From the time she starts planning pregnancy and till 3 months into pregnancy. It is recommended to have at least 1-2 mg of folic acid in the maternal bloodstream at least 3 months before pregnancy and in the first trimester to avoid neural tube defects.
I recommend to start taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid 2-3 months before you start planning a pregnancy. Folic acid is most important for first 8 weeks of pregnancy. So by the time you do pregnancy test you are 4-5 weeks pregnant anyways
