It is usually injected in the lower back area (lumbar area). The needle is placed after the skin is numbed up with local anesthetic (just like when you go to the dentist). It is advanced to the epidural space, after which a catheter is threaded through the needle and the needle is removed. Then the catheter is taped in place and is connected to a special pump that will administer the medication.Usually for certain patients, like pregnant women, the medication administered is used during labor, so the patient would have no pain with the contractions.
Epidural anesthesia is delivered in the epidural space which is a space between two layers of tissue just outside of the dural sac (which contains CSF).
