“Why does my son stutter when he's anxious?”
I am a 38 year old female. I want to know why does my son stutter when he's anxious?

Anxiety causes more tension in the muscles and the more tension causes more stuttering. Therapy should address the emotional, affective, and physical aspects of stuttering.
Dear Mom:
No one has the answer as to why a person stutters. The fact is that all of us stutter once in a while. However, some people stutter in a way that affects their communication. For additional information please visit the American Speech and Hearing Association (https://www.asha.org/public/speech/disorders/stuttering/).
I hope that helps!

In light of new research, there is still no true known cause for stuttering but nervousness and situations of high verbal demand do play a role in more prominent stuttering events. Is a speech language pathologist following and working with your son? That's a specific question for them.

Do you stumble over words more when you get anxious? Your son may also be more self conscious about his speech when he is anxious which can compound his anxiety and therefore increase his disfluencies. Stuttering can also be related to tenseness in the muscles used for speech production. Anxiety can cause muscle tenseness. One of the worst things we can do to someone who stutters is to put pressure on them.
