Why is my daughter doing this?

My 7-year-old daughter pinches her nipples and breasts all the time (She has a favorite toy and she squeezes and rubs its tail at night but she does not carry it during the day). Every day, I am very concerned because no one taught her this and I want to make sure this doesn't cause some illness so I can stop her from doing it. Please tell me if it will cause any illnesses in her future and why is she doing this?

My approach to such difficulties is to increase your proximity to her when she starts this and calmly remove her hand from her nipples. It would be useful, however, to know exactly when she does this. Asking her to stop will usually not work. However, I believe you can disrupt this by proximity to her and helping her to focus on what she could actually be doing at that time - which could be an every day task or an activity that she can do with you.

This type of repetitive behavior and self stimulation could be a sign of of being on the Autism spectrum. It would not hurt to rule this out by having an experienced psychologist in autism spectrum administer the ADOS assessment. Also, look for signs of stress she is experiencing during the daytime - this behavior at night may be a form of coping for her to destress and feel better.
