Why would you need a second root canal on the same tooth?

I am a 48 year old male. I wonder why would you need a second root canal on the same tooth?

Sometimes the tooth can become re-infected and require retreatment of the root canal.
You would need it if there is re-infection in the tooth.
Root canals have a 20% chance of failure due to additional canals that are hard to find or seal. The expertise of the dentist may also influence the results. Sometimes teeth have cracks that may cause discomfort or infection. Proper diagnosis of why your root canal is failing is key to deciding whether to redo the root canal or extract the tooth and get an implant.
