No, a deep cleaning alone will not stop gum disease. Periodontal disease is a progressive disease that can be slowed to a point that it is effectively stopped. However, a "deep cleaning" is only the beginning of the treatment. The patient must develop excellent home care habits and come back for periodontal maintenance appointment three to four times a year to keep the disease at bay. So, if you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, it is imperative that you start the treatment as soon as possible.
Deep cleaning is the first step of treating gum disease. It is often the only treatment needed, especially if you follow through with regular dental cleanings and have good oral hygiene, for example brushing twice a day and flossing daily. Skipping regular cleanings will often lead to more rounds of deep cleaning. If deep cleaning is not enough, then gum surgery may be needed to control the disease.
