Will my son's diabetes affect his vision?

My 16 year old son has diabetes. I want to know will my son's diabetes affect his vision?

As a diabetic, it is important to have regular dilated fundus examinations to rule out diabetic retinopathy.
If the blood sugar levels are elevated or fluctuate, vision will be impaired. If diabetic retinopathy develops as a complication of diabetes, vision will be impaired and blindness may occur.

Thank you for your question. A doctor cannot answer questions regarding your son's health unless they have seen and evaluated him. However, in general, diabetes can cause diabetic retinopathy which can lead to vision loss, therefore, patients with diabetes should have regular dilated screening exams so that the disease is diagnosed early and treated appropriately.
Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus will affect his vision (diabetic retinopathy). He must have a yearly evaluation by an ophthalmologist.
