Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Hypertension

What is the affect of hypertension on kidneys?

My mother is suffering from hypertension. What could be its impact on her kidneys? There's a history of kidney problems in her family but she hasn't experienced any yet.

If BP is very high a long time.
Hypertension is the second highest cause of kidney failure in the population. Her BP should be kept below 130/80 and she should cut back on high-salt diet and be compliant with medications, otherwise, her risk of rapid loss of kidney function is high.
Hypertension can be a causative factor (hypertensive nephroscletodis) or a contributory factor in chronic kidney disease. In addition to the level of blood pressure, other individual factors are involved. As an example, black patients have an approximate eight fold elevation in the risk of hypertension-induced end-stage renal disease. This high risk may persist even with good bp control. Also, it is advisable to look for other reasons for hypertension like polycystic kidney disease, as there are kidney problems in the family also. Please check with her physician.
Hope this will help you.
Hypertension, if not well-controlled, could lead to kidney damage.
Out of control BP always hurts the kidneys
Hypertension and diabetes are the top two causes of chronic kidney disease in the USA. Both are conditions that need to be well controlled in order to avoid damage to the kidneys. If a patient has uncontrolled hypertension, they should see a nephrologist to determine the cause and get the proper treatment.
