“An ulcer on my gums just above my wisdom tooth. Could this be leukoplakia?”
I have been a smoker for 21 years. Inspite of trying hard to leave the habit I have been unable to do so. I recently developed an ulcer along with skin discolouration around my gums just above my wisdom tooth. I visited an oncologist who said it could be premalignancy infection. What are the other symptoms to confirm the diagnosis?

Hi,
Thank you for your question. You have asked a good question. Oral leukoplakia is a premalignant lesion commonly found in smokers. It is a white patch that may become firm, rough or red-fissured or ulcerated. It may become sore and painful but it is usually painless. It may or may not resolve with cessation of habit. 2% of patients develop squamous cell carcinoma. Early biopsy is essential.
I hope you feel better and please let me know if you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Dr. Hays
