Internist Questions Diabetic Neuropathy

Is there any medication to treat diabetic neuropathy?

My mother is at the onset of diabetic neuropathy. What can we do to manage it for her? Are there any medications that she can use?

Diabetic neuropathy is the most common complication of diabetes mellitus cause by nerve damage du to poor diabetic control in which most of the time is permanent.

Key components of the management of diabetic neuropathy include:
-Tight diabetic control to prevent further damage
-pain/ symptomatic management which I suggest you have further discussion with your mother primary physician regard to prognosis, treatment goal, options and potential side effects from the treatment
There are several medications for treatment of diabetic neuropathy. I would recommend to consult your mother's physician to recommend and prescribe medication based on her symptoms. Some of the commonly prescribed medications include Gabapentin, Lyrica, Amitriptyline etc. Also, strict control of blood sugars helps improve neuropathy and prevents it from progressing rapidly.
Pregablin is indicated and FDA approved for diabetic neuropathy. But, the TYPE of SYMPTOMS one has will determine whether or not it may help:

Thus symptoms like numbness or tingling will likely NOT improve with pregabalin, but sx of burning and pain may well improve with the medication.
