Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Creatinine Test

Are there any symptoms that indicate high creatinine?

My mother all of a sudden had an increase in creatinine levels. Now she is on medication to bring them down. What are the symptoms that we can watch out for that indicate increasing creatinine levels?

Nausea, weakness, but best to follow the lab work frequently.
Kidney disease is a silent disease and needs to be monitored. Most patients will not have symptoms till it advances to stage 5. Other than symptoms of edema, rest come at advanced renal failure ( stage 5) and at that point people suffer from nausea, metallic taste, loss of appetite, worsening mental status due to uremia etc.

For management and stabilization of kidney disease it's very important to regularly see your kidney doctor so they can monitor not just the Creatinine levels but also other issues like acid base balance, electrolytes esp potassium level in order to manage the chronic kidney disease medically till it is too advanced and needs dialysis or transplant
In most cases, elevated creatinine levels do not produce any symptoms. It is only in the case of advanced kidney disease such as CKD (chronic kidney disease) Stage 4 or 5 that symptoms can occur. Usually, the symptoms are not associated with pain. They are general symptoms that are associated with an overall "unhealthy" feeling such as shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and poor appetite. Since the kidneys are responsible for keeping the body's chemistry healthy, these symptoms are associated with the abnormalities that occur in the body when the chemistry is abnormal or if there is excessive fluid build-up in the case of shortness of breath. Many patients are not aware of the fact that they have early stage kidney disease because of the relative absence of any symptoms.
