Are antibiotics necessary after dental implant surgery?

My doctor told me to take antibiotics after my dental implant procedure. Is this really necessary for me to take? Why?

Sometimes they are.
Yes. Surgery just about anywhere else on the body can be done with relative sterility. The mouth is full of bacteria, we can’t change that, but we can decrease the likelihood of a post-op infection with antibiotics. I typically give a 3-4 day course when I place implants.
