Plastic Surgeon Questions Liposuction

Are there health risks involved with liposuction?

I'm 37, and have some stubborn fat in my legs on my legs. Can it be removed with liposuction? Are there health risks involved with liposuction?

If you are an appropriate candidate for liposuction with good skin tone the excess fat from the legs can be removed. Liposuction has surgical risks such as infection bleeding, dents, asymmetries, and irregularities. Health risks of surgery depend heavily on the patient’s general health and body weight. Higher risk factors would include diabetes, heart disease, obesity, the use of hormones (which may be discontinued preoperatively), etc. There are rare, worse complications that can occur. They should be discussed with your surgeon in detail.
Yes, there can be complications as with any surgery. Mainly depending on the amount of time that the procedure takes, and the amount of fat that is being removed. Perforation of other organs or structures is often a problem as well.
In general, liposuction is quite acceptable.
Yes.
Plastic Surgery in general is very safe and carries little risk. This includes liposuction. There are some risks that can be seen with liposuction such as bleeding and infection but they are relatively low. There are some risks that are rarely seen such as poor cosmetics, nerve or muscle weakness and pigment changes, when the surgery is performed by a well trained and experienced surgeon. If you have an experienced surgeon who is appropriately trained then you should not worry about anything.
Unless you have medical reasons contraindicating liposuction risks should be minimal in the hands of a board certified plastic surgeon. Having said that you should be examined. A careful medical history taken, and minimal blood work. At times your primary care doctor may be asked fora medical clearance for surgery. Depending on the quality of your skin your plastic surgeon may elect to do liposuction combined with skin tightening equipment so after surgery you don’t end up with sagging skin. General rare side effects after liposuction can be; bleeding, infection, skin dimpling, discoloration, asymmetry, emboli. The above are very rare and by far most patients are very satisfied with the results. Good luck to you.
Thank you for your question. The localized fat can be treated with liposuction. It depends on the amount, and the location. As with any surgery, there are always some risks that need to be addressed with the patient. Of course, the risk of those complications are minimized with the precautions taken before, during, and after surgery. I would suggest that you discuss those with whomever will be your treating surgeon.

Liposuction can be used to trim the legs. The most common areas treated are the saddle bags, lower legs and medial thighs. The front and back of the legs are not good areas for suction. If you are in good health liposuction poses little risk. It can be done with sedation and local anesthesia. If you are over weight it will be best to be near your normal weight before liposuction. Good luck.
Yes. Especially with doctors who should not be doing the procedure. Get a Board certified plastic surgeon with a lot of experience.
The most dangerous risk after liposuction of your legs is the development of a blood clot in your legs. Frequent walking, even the day of surgery will help decrease that. Overall the risk is low though. In general, liposuction, in experienced hands, is a low risk procedure
