Ear-Nose and Throat Doctor (ENT) Questions Tonsil Stones

Are tonsil stones surgically removed?

My son looks like he has tonsil stones in the back of his throat. If they are, would he need to have these surgically removed?

Tonsil stones do not need to be removed surgically. Usually, gently cleaning the area with a water pick or a q tip can get the stone out of it is uncomfortable. Go see your local pediatric ENT for help if needed.
You can try using a water pik. Otherwise, we commonly remove the tonsils.
Not necessarily. These are cryptic debris in the tonsil crypts and can be dislodged in ENT office exams or use of irrigation techniques.
They can be curetted out, gargled out. If large, causing halitosis, or recurring infections, they can be electively removed by surgery.
